Does Apollonia’s Pizzeria Really Serve the Best Pizza in LA?

We recently heard the buzz about Apollonia’s Pizzeria, touted by TikTok as the best pizza in Los Angeles. Naturally, we had to see what all the hype was about. We arrived around 7 PM, eager and curious to dive into what was claimed to be LA’s top slice.

Urban Appetite Tips: Arrive early or close to closing time; we waited an hour and a half. Consider ordering online for pickup to skip the lines. Most importantly, bring cash—there are no signs indicating this, and we learned the hard way, resulting in waiting in line twice.

Hours: Wednesday - Sunday: 12 PM - 2:30 PM and 5 PM - 8 PM. Plan your visit accordingly to avoid long waits and any disappointment.

The ambiance at Apollonia’s Pizzeria is a nostalgic nod to old-school rockabilly American tradition. The restaurant exudes a vintage charm with its retro decor and lively atmosphere. Watching their hardworking staff prepare pizzas from scratch through the open kitchen view adds a genuine touch to the experience. The tantalizing aroma of freshly baked dough and melted cheese wafts through the air, making the wait even more tantalizing. They offer both New York-style and deep-dish pizzas, and we decided to try both to get the full experience.

After placing our order, we had an hour-long wait, which we spent exploring the nearby bars and restaurants in the vibrant mid-Wilshire neighborhood. When our pizzas were finally ready, we had to take them to go, as there is currently no indoor dining. We found a nearby park to indulge in our long-awaited pizzas.

The Taste Test: The Traditional Margherita Pizza was delicious, with a crispy crust and flavorful toppings. As a self-proclaimed New York-style pizza connoisseur, I found it good but not worthy of the title "best pizza in LA." The tomato sauce was tangy and fresh, the mozzarella melted perfectly, and the basil added a nice aromatic touch. However, it lacked the wow factor to be deemed the best.

The Acapulco Gold Deep Dish pizza, on the other hand, was a flavor powerhouse. The dough had a perfect contrast between the crunchy exterior and soft, doughy interior. The rich tomato sauce, fresh herbs, and a generous amount of cheese created a delightful blend of textures and flavors. It was savory, cheesy, and had just the right amount of spice to keep things interesting.

Despite the lengthy wait and some initial frustrations, we were ultimately satisfied with our meal. Apollonia’s Pizzeria offers a delicious slice of both New York-style and deep-dish pizzas, but in our quest for LA’s best pizza, we found it fell just short of the title. Nonetheless, it’s worth the visit to judge for yourself.

If you’re planning to visit, just remember to bring cash, be prepared for a wait, and make sure to plan your visit within their limited hours. And, if you’re not convinced, the search for LA’s best slice continues—because, after all, someone has to do the hard work of taste-testing all the pizza joints in town, right?

Address: 5176 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90036

So, next time you’re in mid-Wilshire and craving some pizza, give Apollonia’s a try. Just remember, the search for the perfect slice is all part of the fun!
